Several Italian cities have introduced closures\, restric tions and limitations on artists’ access to historic city centres\, whil e the same regulations often continue to state their intention to recognis e and promote street arts. It is from this contradiction that The State of the Art takes its starting point: a day of discussion dedicated to perfor ming arts in public space and to the conditions needed for them to be reco gnised as an integral part of the cultural life of cities. The issue is no t only about the rules governing artists’ presence in public space. It a lso concerns the way cities imagine and shape public space\, the relations hip between citizens and artistic practices\, the training of those who ch oose to work in the performing arts and\, more broadly\, the possibility o f building sustainable professional careers. The day brings together three closely connected dimensions: education\, training and professionalisatio n. From the first encounter between an artist and an audience in an urban setting\, to the development of new skills\, and finally to the economic a nd organisational conditions that allow an artistic profession to grow and remain sustainable over time.
